The Thursday Island Township is noteworthy for being the most northerly town in Australia and is 39 kilometres off the northern coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Thursday Island is the main island in the Torres Strait region which includes over 20 islands and a population of over 25 000.
The island's community is a diverse mix of cultures with native Torres Strait Islanders and Papua New Guineans. It is a welcoming island community and has a number of services available including a sporting complex, gym, public library as well as ANZAC park and Ken Brown Oval.
The Torres Strait Campus of Tafe Northern is located on the island next to the high school and is the leader in education for the Torres Strait.
