As an integral part of TAFE Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (GBRIMC) has entered into discussions with the Australian Maritime College (AMC) to facilitate and promote higher education opportunities for Maritime students seeking Advanced Diploma and Degree level qualifications.
As the GBRIMC continues to develop its capability and educational offerings for Maritime professionals, this represents a significant opportunity for the region with students being potentially being offered a clear pathway to complete their first year of their degree study in Cairns and then being able to complete their studies at the AMC /University of Tasmania (UTAS) in Launceston.
The discussions are in response to the national need for Maritime Professionals to have higher qualifications and to provide maritime students with a pathway to university studies at the internationally acclaimed maritime degree courses offered at UTAS.
Whilst discussions are at preliminary stages the organisations are finalising terms for a Training Working Group which will benefit all parties.
Marine Portfolio Manager, Gary Haddock said this was potentially an exciting further educational opportunity for maritime students at GBRIMC.
"At the GBRIMC our classes are highly sort after as we respond to industry needs by expanding the maritime training we offer to the National Maritime training market." Mr Haddock said.
"Meeting with both, Catherine Wilson, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Professor Dev Ranmuthugala, Director of AMC was extremely worthwhile and I can see that in the near future at GBRIMC we could be providing our students with a direct entry pathway to UTAS maritime degree courses.
"Such a partnership between GBRIMC and AMC is beneficial for local and national marine industry employers in that their marine employees will have the opportunity of higher level studies and be able to make a greater contribution to national and international maritime operations."
