Students undertaking this qualification and be equipped to provide high-level secretarial, reception and administration services, across a wide cross-section of the health profession and have the tools to deliver quality patient care and customer service. Skills covered include, management of client files and records, administration and processing of medical accounts, co-ordination of appointments, referrals, schedules and other office correspondence. Heath administration staff are expected to deal effectively and professionally with a wide range of clients both over-the-counter and by phone in a host of complex and challenging situations. These functions can be carried out in a range of settings including, both public and private hospitals, community health centres, private practice, specialist clinic, allied health, dental, veterinary surgery etc.
This qualification is suited to Australian Apprenticeship pathways. Students who have been working within a medical reception/administration area are encouraged to discuss their work skills and previous training experiences with their teacher at enrolment - it is possible to use this information to credit applicants with units through a process of Recognition of Current Competency.
Careers available include medical receptionist, medical administrator, hospital administrator, admissions clerk, clinical coding clerk, administrative worker, ward clerk, dental receptionist, allied health receptionist or veterinary receptionist. After completing this qualification, students may choose to study the Certificate IV in Health Administration to further enhance their knowledge, skills and employment opportunities.
This qualification may also provide a pathway to relate Certificate IV courses/studies (e.g. Certificate IV in Health Supervision). Course details
