Want to work in health?

Students undertaking this qualification and be equipped to provide high-level secretarial, reception and administration services, across a wide cross-section of the health profession and have the tools to deliver quality patient care and customer service. Skills covered include, management of client files and records, administration and processing of medical accounts, co-ordination of appointments, referrals, schedules and other office correspondence. Heath administration staff are expected to deal effectively and professionally with a wide range of clients both over-the-counter and by phone in a host of complex and challenging situations. These functions can be carried out in a range of settings including, both public and private hospitals, community health centres, private practice, specialist clinic, allied health, dental, veterinary surgery etc.

This qualification is suited to Australian Apprenticeship pathways. Students who have been working within a medical reception/administration area are encouraged to discuss their work skills and previous training experiences with their teacher at enrolment - it is possible to use this information to credit applicants with units through a process of Recognition of Current Competency. Entry requirements

No entry requirements are specified. Students will have their skills, attributes, experience and potential matched to the Australian Qualifications Framework level relevant to this program.  This mapping will be undertaken at the development stage of an individual training plan which will take into account each student's language, literacy and numeracy needs; Recognition of Prior Learning; Recognition of current competency and other specific needs at the time of the interview.

A USB stick and Internet access is required.  Purchase of Medical Terminology Textbook ($40.01) at enrolment.

Timetable

Cairns Campus: Part time over 12 months attending one day per fortnight (Wednesday 9:00am - 12:00am) then for the remaining time, students will study online via Connect.
External: 12 months. Students will study online via Connect and enrol into 2 units at a time. Timetable with assessments due six weeks after enrolment.

Units

Students need to successfully complete 13 units to gain the qualification; 5 core and 8 elective units.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.

Medical Terminology Textbook can be purchased at enrolment for the cost of $40.01

Outcome

HLT37315 Certificate III in Health Administration.  Careers available include medical receptionist, medical administrator, hospital administrator, admissions clerk, clinical coding clerk, administrative worker, ward clerk, dental receptionist, allied health receptionist or veterinary receptionist.  After completing this qualification, students may choose to study the Certificate IV in Health Administration to further enhance their knowledge, skills and employment opportunities.

This qualification may also provide a pathway to relate Certificate IV courses/studies (e.g. Certificate IV in Health Supervision).
