Develop the skills to interpret Optometrists prescriptions, provide advice to clients about spectacle frames, lenses, contact lenses, sunglasses and safety eyewear. Entry requirements

It is expected that all students have employment in a retail optical outlet prior to enrolling in this course.  Students must be supported with regular monitoring of performance and a learning environment as observation by a supervisor is a requirement of assessments.  As the course is delivered online, students must have sound computer skills and access to the Internet via their personal computer including an email address, access to a webcam and headset with microphone.  As students will be required to read and respond to written, technical materials and conduct research, a sound achievement in English and Mathematics is highly desirable. 

Students are required to contact teacher prior to enrolment to obtain an individual training program.

The use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources including: automatic edgers, hand edgers, blockers, markers, focimeters, nylon groover, drill, parallel rulers, PD ruler, frame tools, frames, lenses, frame heater, soldering unit.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable Internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.


Classes are held online in a virtual classroom on Tuesday evening from 6.30pm according to the schedule.  Additionally, another self-directed home study of approximately 4 hours per week is required.

At least 200 hours of direct client contact work is required.


Students need to successfully complete 14 units to gain the qualification; 9 core and 5 elective units.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.
