Become a Certified Welder

This program provides advanced practical and theory components to become a Certified Welder.  On completion your name will be added to the nationwide register on the Welding Technology Institute of Australia’s (WTIA) AWCR website.

To apply for a wallet card from WTIA you must complete an application form and include 2 passport sized photographs (signed and dated by a JP indicating that the photo is a true likeness of the applicant) and satisfactory evidence of having met the qualification as required by A.S.1796. Entry requirements

(A) One year’s welding experience, subsequent to or during an apprenticeship to an acceptable trade, including 40 hours’ training in the chosen welding process.

(B) Two years’ welding experience and documentary evidence of the successful completion of one or more welding programs, which includes at least 300 hours’ training, in the theory and practice of welding and, during or subsequent to this period, 40 hours’ training in the chosen welding process.

(C) Three years’ welding experience and, during or subsequent to this period, 40 hours’ training in the chosen welding process.

Resources required

Welding helmet and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It is advised that students bring a leather jacket/arms; hood; gloves and spare clear screens for their welding helmets.

Timetable

Theory - Classroom based:  One night, then continuing on Monday nights 6.00pm - 9.00pm, over 10 weeks (if required)
Theory (external): Complete theory component at your own pace, practical assessment will be done on campus.
Practical - Classroom based: One night, Wednesday night 6.00pm - 9.00pm, over 10 weeks.

The practical assessment will be held at the end of the 10 weeks on Saturday between 8:00am and 3:00pm.
