Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course, however it is recommended you have proficient report and assignment writing abilities, including critical thinking and referencing skills.  If you’re unsure and think you may need assistance, talk to our career counsellor first to make sure this course is right for you.

Age: The Education and Care Services National Regulations require family day care educators to be 18 years of age. Educators working in a centre-based service under 18 years must be supervised. Course applicants should be 17 years or older.

Working with Children check (Blue Card): Volunteers and trainee students who work with children and young people must hold a current blue card as this work falls into the category of regulated employment. Blue cards for volunteers and trainee students are valid for three years and there is no application fee, unless the trainee student is a paid employee. A volunteer or trainee student must not commence regulated child-related work until they hold a valid blue card.

Immunisation: Students should be aware that all children service educators may be exposed to diseases that are preventable by vaccination. To manage the risk to educators, children services may require the completion of a vaccination record or full immunisation.

Resources required

Resources are online so access to a computer with reliable Internet connection is required.  Students may need to purchase the T-Shirt if they are required to do vocational placement. T-Shirts are non-refundable.  Students should purchase a USB drive and stationary items such as pens and paper.

When you have enrolled, you will be granted access to our online learning platform. The learning environment has the assessment tasks and all the information for each unit of competency in the qualification. If you wish, you can purchase a suggested text book that provides information relevant to each of the competencies studied. As this is blended delivery you can participate in scheduled classes, study groups or access individual support via email and telephone. If you need further help, you can make an individual appointment to meet with your teacher.


Cairns:  The course is delivered as face to face classes scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (09:00am - 2:45pm), Thursday (10:30am - 4:15pm) and Fridays are for Vocational Placement at an Early Childhood Education Care Service, over a 18month duration.  Students can enrol at any time in the next cluster offered.

Townsville (Pimlico): The course is delivered as face to face classes scheduled Monday, Tuesday (09:00am - 2:45pm), Thursday (10:30am - 2:45pm), and Fridays are for Vocational Placement at an Early Childhood Education Care Service, over a 18month duration.  Students can enrol at any time in the next cluster offered.

Dates:  8 December.  2017: 19 January, 30 January, 23 February, 23 March, 20 April, 18 May and 15 June.
Time:  1:00pm
Room: Cairns J block, room 1.02; and Townsville (Pimlico) F block, room 3.32

External students: Students have 18months to 2 years to complete their studies.  Students enrol into a cluster of two, three or four units over the duration of studies.  Each cluster has a study period of 14 weeks or 20 weeks to complete the cluster from the time of enrolment. External students must be within our TAFE Queensland North geographical footprint in order for teachers to complete workplace observations. Delivery sites by arrangement.


Students who are currently not working in the ECEC sector are required to complete vocational placement for this program and 240 hours must be completed in an early childhood education and care service.

Please note that if students are wishing to access VET Student Loans to pay for their fees, they must meet the ‘Student entry procedure’ requirements; namely:

  • obtains a copy of a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education that has been awarded to the student by an agency or authority of a State or Territory for the student’s completion of year 12; or

  • the student is assessed as displaying competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy; and that the VET provider reasonably believes that the student displays that competence.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

The Higher Level Skills Subsidy is a one-off subsidy that offsets the cost of an eligible Certificate IV or higher courses.

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • For some courses, you may also be required to hold a certificate 3 in a relevant industry field.


You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability. This Diploma has direct entry into multiple universities and can provide up to 27 credit points off your Degree.
