This unit will develop the student’s Mandarin communication skills to interact in a positive and courteous way with Chinese visitors. Participate in routine communications and provide simple directions and instructions in Mandarin including the use and understanding of key words, phrases, sentences and vocabulary specific to communicating about number, time, place, distance, quantity and currency. It covers speaking and listening skills required to conduct routine tasks and provide simple factual information and instructions.

The unit will also teach students about Chinese cultural values and social norms such as body language; forms of address; and taboo topics.

This unit is an elective in the Certificate III Travel and Tourism programs. In a tourism context Mandarin speakers are in demand in a number of roles such as tourism guiding, tourism operations, tourism sales and marketing Course details

Part time: Monday evening classes from 6.00pm - 8.00pm over 16 weeks (14 weeks of attendance). Attendance to classes is strongly recommended and weekly self-directed practice sessions in between classes re required to ensure competency

There are no additional costs to study this course.


This unit is part of the Diploma and Certificate III Travel and Tourism programs, however it may be studied as a stand-alone unit provided the student pays for the unit at a fee for service price.

There is no direct parity with any formal language proficiency ratings or assessment framework, but this unit broadly relates to International Second Language Proficiency Ratings (ISLPR) 1+ to 2.
