Gain the knowledge and skills to confidently take on a role in high-level network design, configuration and management. Students will also gain foundational skills needed for other Information Technology areas such as programming, web technologies, computer services and computer troubleshooting.

Students will be trained as network administrators according to current industry practices, network hardware, software and virtualisation technology.

The qualification covers a wide range of content in relation to career opportunities in:

  • local area networks
  • wide area networks
  • protocols
  • network topologies
  • transmission media
  • web development
  • security

Elements of the program will be project-based, giving students the opportunity to work as part of a team in a real-world environment. This will include the installation and configuration of network hardware/software such as:

  • cabling
  • power management systems
  • switches
  • rack-mounted routers
  • rack-mounted servers
  • VOIP phones
  • wireless access points
  • Virtualization of Hardware using:
    • VMware - Player/Workstation then later using ESXi
    • Microsoft Hyper-V VDI ( Townsville Only)
  • Server administration functions and services using multiple operating systems such as Windows, Linux etc.
  • Microsoft Academy
  • scripting/batch file to reduce repetitive processes

Cairns Only - Students will undertake the Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching course as part of the Diploma. Our practical lab has all the required needs for CCNA training and will prepare you for rollout within a business. Course details

Entry requirements

Prospective students should complete the self-assessment checklist (located above under the Relevant documents section) to determine which course would best suit their experience. Applicants may need to attend an interview prior to enrolment if unsure.

Students will be expected to have computer skills including basic operating systems, computer hardware, an understanding of office applications (word processing, spread sheets and power point).

There are no prerequisite requirements for this qualification, however, English and math’s skills equivalent to year 12 level are recommended.

Resources required

Students must wear closed in shoes when working in the Hardware classroom.

Timetable

Cairns campus: Full time over 12 months attending 3 days per week (Wednesday- Friday 08:30am- 04:30pm, and Thursday 10:30am - 04:30pm). with an optional catch up on Friday mornings.  Students should expect an additional 1.5hrs of self study outside of classroom delivery.

Townsville (Pimlico) campus : Full time over 12 months attending four days per week.

VET Student Loans

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prior to applying for a VET Student Loan, please ensure that you have read and understood the VET Student Loans Pre-Enrolment Information

VET Student Loans are an interest-free loan from the Australian Government that help students pay for their education and training.

TAFE Queensland receives the full loan amount for your course directly from the Government, and you repay your loan through the Australian taxation system once your income reaches a certain threshold.

You are eligible for a VET Student Loan if you:

You must demonstrate academic suitability by:

  • providing a copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (year 12 certificate); OR
  • providing evidence of successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English), OR
  • are assessed as a minimum of Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ASCF) in both reading and numeracy

Please note that all students enrolling in an accredited course are required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

VET student loans will not be approved for students who do not meet the eligibility requirements. VET student loans gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front, or you are not eligible for VET Student Loan, you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Note: If you are accessing a VET Student Loan, and there is a difference between the loan cap amount and the total cost of your course (for example your loan cap amount is $10,000 and your course costs $11,000 - there is a $1,000 difference), you are required to pay the difference.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

The Higher Level Skills Subsidy is a one-off subsidy that offsets the cost of an eligible Certificate IV or higher courses.

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • For some courses, you may also be required to hold a certificate 3 in a relevant industry field.

You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability.   • Portable hard drive (100GB+) is recommended but only required for taking virtual machines home/software
