  • Students need at least a Year 10 or equivalent in English.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills are also required.
  • Applicants are not required to be over 18 years of age to undertake this course.

Resources required

Classroom delivery: Closed in shoes, blue or black pen and paper.
Blended delivery: Black or Blue pen to complete the self paced theory.
Online delivery: computer with access to a scanner to upload the 'Observation Checklist', Internet access.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable Internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Blended & Whitsunday (Cannonvale) campus:  Students are required to complete pre-reading prior to attending class via the Learning Management System, Connect.  Please refer to the welcome email after enrolling on instructions for how to access the system. For helpful tips on navigating Connect, visit:


Cairns campus - Blended Delivery: A combination of self-paced and face-to-face practical assessment.
Once enrolment and payment is completed a commencement notification will be sent to your email address. It will contain your username, password and login instructions to help you get started. 

Students complete the theory and online assessment self-paced prior to attending the face-to-face practical assessment. The online theory assessment must be completed before the Wednesday of the practical assessments week.

Dates for practical assessment are:

  • 9 March 2018 - Registration available 29 January 2018
  • 20 April 2018 - Registration available 29 January 2018
  • 4 May 2018 - Registration available 29 January 2018
  • 17 August 2018 - Registration available 4 May 2018
  • 24 August 2018 - Registration available 4 May 2018

  • 23 November 2018 - Registration available 4 May 2018

Practical  assessment: sessions commence on Fridays at 9.00am to 1.00pm - online theory MUST be completed prior to attending.

The resources and online assessment for the self-paced learning will be available on the Learning Management System, Connect. Each student wil be individually scheduled to complete practical assessment on the Friday of assessment week.

Cannonvale (Whitsunday) campus - Blended Delivery: A combination of self-paced and face-to-face delivery.  Once enrolment and payment are completed a commencement notification will be sent to your email address. It will contain your username, password and login instructions to help you get started. 

RSA assessment becomes available 4 days prior to workshop.  Use this time to start your online reading prior to the workshop.  Practical assessments are completed during the workshop.  Theory reading and 2 x quizzes are completed self-paced, online.  Students have 4 weeks to complete and finalise 2 x quizzes.

  • 1st workshop:  Connect (online) opens Monday 29 January 2018.  Connect (online) closes Monday 26 February 2018
  • 2nd workshop:  Connect (online) opens Monday 16 July 2018.  Connect (online) closes Monday 13 August 2018.

Please contact the Whitsunday Campus if you currently work in the Hospitality Industry as you have the option of completing this course 100% online.  Practical Assessment can be conducted at your workplace.  Due to legislative reasons, RPL is not offered for RSA courses.

Mt Isa campus - Face to Face Delivery: Expressions of Interest.

Townsville (Pimlico) campus - Face to Face Delivery: Delivery, Written Assessment and Practical in one full day (9am - 4pm)

External - Online Delivery: Once enrolment and payment are completed a commencement notification will be sent to your email address. It will contain your username, password and login instructions to help you get started.  Participants will have 14 working days from the enrolment start date to complete the study online and written and practical assessments.  Students use the Learning Management System (Connect) to complete the theory component and must then submit an 'Observation Checklist' completed by industry.

Important Information

The Liquor Licensing Commission have advised that RSA Certificates are valid for life (unless there are changes to legislation in the future).

This course is suitable for hotel, restaurant and cafe service personnel, sport and services clubs. It is also suitable for those looking for a career as an airline cabin crew member.

Upon successful completion students receive a TAFE Queensland 'Statement of Attainment' for Responsible Service of Alcohol.  Students can then contact the Queensland Liquor Licensing Division for a Statement of Attainment. (
