Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Classroom Trainee Refrigerant Handling Licence. Once you have applied for your Classroom Trainee Refrigerant Licence, Australian Refrigeration Council (ARCtick) will require the Trainer Declaration section to be completed by your TAFE teacher. This declaration will then be returned to you for you to submit the full application, attach a passport photo and organise payment to the Australian Refrigeration Council.

It is recommended you are trade qualified or currently work within the industry repairing and servicing automotive air-conditioning systems.  Applicants must have a high degree of motivation and interest along with appropriate literacy and numeracy skills appropriate to this level along with adequate industry experience.

Please be aware that you will also be required to supply the following items at your own cost:
Uniforms: Short sleeved shirt and shorts. Long pants and shirts for welding subjects with appropriate safety equipment/eyewear.
Shoes: Safety boots are required at all times.
Safety equipment: 2 x Safety glasses to designated Australian standards. (Available from your local PPE retail outlet).
Equipment: Optional earplugs.
Materials: For theory components we recommend:  240 page A4 Notebook, pocket notebook, calculator, 2 blue biros, pencil case, highlighter, storage folder to hold textbooks and work material.
Other: All students with long hair will be required to wear hair protection when working with or around moving machinery or while in a designated area of operation.


Cairns Campus: 5 days, Monday to Friday, 8am - 5pm

Mount Isa Campus: 4 days, Monday to Thursday 8am - 4.30pm

Townsville Trade Training Centre: 5 days, Monday to Friday 8am - 4.30pm

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.
