This program will develop your confidence, background knowledge, resource knowledge and the practical skills required to begin and advance as a Hairdresser. You will learn to cut, style, colour, straighten and permanently wave hair as well as learn how to communicate with clients in an effective and professional manner.

This course provides training for those who wish to be a Qualified Hairdresser, Manager and/or Salon Owner.  An apprentice is a person employed under a training agreement while they are working. Apprenticeships provide the practical and theoretical training required to enhance a career in a chosen field.

Entry requirements

Apprentices: Must be 15 years of age or older and must be employed to qualify for an apprenticeship. You can be an existing employee or a new employee (less than 3 months full time). It is recommended that prospective apprentices complete year 10 or equivalent with sound achievement In English and Maths and have good communication skills. All apprentices are required to complete a literacy and numeracy test.

The Child Employment Act states that the minimum age for apprentices and trainees is 13 years of age, unless otherwise stated. For more information please head to

Employers: Need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice. For the benefit of both parties; probation period of 30 days for non school based apprentices and 3 months for school apprentices will apply to all traineeship contracts.

Burdekin campus: Ongoing enrolments, day release and on the job training and assessing.  Day release Tuesday 9:00am to 4:30pm; On the job training and assessing fortnightly/monthly

Cairns campus: Ongoing enrolments and day release.  Day release Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 8:30am to 4:15pm.

Additional costs

Please be aware that you will be required to supply the following items at your own cost:

  • Uniforms: Black clothing or professional industry attire (eg black pants with black or coloured blouse) or all black clothing.
  • Shoes: Closed in shoes.
  • Equipment: Equipment list is supplied at sign up. The kit will include brushes, combs, sectioners, apron, tool bag and gloves.
  • Other: Pen, pencils, coloured pencils, highlighters, eraser, ruler, glue scissors, note pad.
