Relevant competencies from STCW Tables A-VI/1-1 and A-VI/1-2

The Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) Continued Competence Refresher Training is designed for holders of an AMSA issued Certificate of Safety Training and meets the mandatory Sea Survival and Fire Fighting continued competency requirements for current Seafarers with qualifying sea service.

This course covers the relevant refresher competencies from the STCW short courses, Personal Survival Techniques and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting.

Covers relevant components of:

  • Personal Survival Techniques – STCW Table A-VI/1-1.
  • Fire Prevention or Fire Fighting – STCW Table A-VI/1-2.

Note: All continued competence refresher courses are valid for up to 5 years and may be used once for revalidation purposes

Entry requirements

  • AMSA issued Certificate of Safety Training (CoST)
  • Minimum age requirement is 16 years.

As this course involves use of breathing apparatus, extinguishing fires, confined spaces and other strenuous activities, you will be required to complete a medical declaration prior to commencing training. The result of which may, in some circumstances, preclude you from completing the fire component.

Resources required

  • Certified copy of your current Senior First Aid qualification (HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or equivalent) issued from an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
  • Closed in footwear and socks (runners are suitable), long sleeve shirt and long pants (or overalls) for fire and pool training

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Concession

Outcome

On successful completion of the CoST refresher course, having reached a satisfactory level in demonstrated practical competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the requirements for the revalidation of Certificate of Safety training as specified by the STCW Convention and Code, as per the Manila 2010 amendments.
