Do you want to develop some front office and reception knowledge so you can work in a hotel or resort?  Then this program is for you, either for newcomers to the hospitality industry or existing workers looking to diversity their skills. You will develop a broad set of skills to prepare you for work in a front office and reception environment. This program will teach you the required skills to work in reservations, front office, concierge, tour desk and housekeeping for various accommodation establishments including hotels, motels, islands and ski resorts. The Certificate III in Hospitality is ideal for newcomers to the hospitality industry or existing workers looking to diversify their skills.

During the course you will use one of the industries computerised accommodation booking systems [OPERA Fidelio].

Topics include:

  • Working on the front desk of hotels, motels and serviced apartments
  • Professional personal presentation
  • Meeting guest expectations
  • Understanding guests needs and expectations
  • Dealing with difficult guests
  • Computer system - Opera (reservations, check-in and check-out, reports, room allocation, special requests and processing financial transactions)

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however TAFE Queensland requires the following entry requirements be met:

  • Basic computer skills (& able to use a computer keyboard quickly and efficiently)

 And either

  • Completed Year 10 or equivalent with sound achievement in English, or
  • Mature age with sound language, literacy, and numeracy skills

Timetable

Cairns campus:  Full time delivered over 6 months attending 1 day per week plus 36 industry shifts.

Front office, tour desk and concierge subjects: Thursdays from 9:00am to 3:30pm, starting Thursday 5th October 2017 until Thursday 7 December 2017.

Operations and Customer Service subjects: Available as self-paced or one day workshops.

Placement

  • Students must complete a log book for each of the 36 services (which relates to subject SITHIND004 Work Effectively in Hospitality Services). Students are able to complete the services as paid work or work experience.
  • Students not currently working in the industry are required to enrol into Vocational Placement. Students are required to find their own suitable venue in which to complete placement (work experience).

Units

To successfully complete the Certificate III in Hospitality (Accommodation Services), students are required to complete 15 units (7 core and 8 elective units)

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.
