The Diploma of Mental Health provides students with a high level of specialised skills and knowledge in the mental health sector.

The course is suitable for people currently working in the mental health sector as a manager or upskilling to a management role.  The candidate must provide evidence of at least 160 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of this qualification. Course details

Entry requirements

It is highly recommended that students are 17 years of age by the course commencement date and be self-motivated with sound English skills. Mature aged applicants are welcome.

Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Students will commence their studies on the online learning system Catapult and will be transitioned over to online learning system Connect once available.

Timetable

Students have three to four weeks from the date of enrolment per unit to submit assessment.

Teachers will provide students with a training plan after enrolment.

Please note that students will be expected to complete approximately 15 hours per week of self directed studies to successfully complete this qualification.

Placement

Vocational Placement is a requirement of the course if not working in the Mental Health Sector. Students will need to complete the minimum of 160 hours of placement under the guidance of a mentor. If students live in the local area of Cairns they will be assisted to find placement if unable to find a placement themselves and students that do not live in the local area will need to find placement and assistance will be given to complete the relevant documentation.

Student will be expected to complete a Vocational Placement Booklet with 3rd Party reports.

Important Information

If the student is not employed in the sector and undertaking Vocational Placement they will need to apply for a Working with Children Blue Card with the assistance of TAFE North and they may also be required to obtain a police check at their own cost dependant on the needs of the industry.

Please note that if students are wishing to access VET Student Loans to pay for their fees, they must meet the ‘Student entry procedure’ requirements; namely:

  • obtains a copy of a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education that has been awarded to the student by an agency or authority of a State or Territory for the student’s completion of year 12; or

  • the student is assessed as displaying competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy; and that the VET provider reasonably believes that the student displays that competence.

Payment Plan

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.
