  • There are no formal entry requirements however a sound achievement in Year 10 Maths and English is desirable
  • It is strongly recommended that students posses a sound knowledge of computing skills
  • Mature age applicants are welcome


Study from any location

Resources required

Students must have access to a reliable Internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player.  This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.  Students not already working in the Tourism, Hospitality or Events industry will also be required to record and upload video evidence, therefore access to video recording equipment (phones may be suitable) is also required.

A USB and a calculator are required


Online: Once enrolment and payment are completed a commencement notification will be sent to your email address. It will contain your username, password and login instructions to help you get started. The resources and online assessment for the self-paced learning will be available on the Learning Management System, Connect.  There is no structured timetable for online study, however each unit/s of competency will have a maximum time allocated to complete that unit/s.  All assessments are required to be submitted within that time.  Refer to the Enrolment plan located below under Relevant Documents on this page for more details.

To complete the Certificate III in Tourism, student must successfully complete 15 units (4 core units and 11 elective units)

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.

If you're a Queensland resident, have just finished year 12 and are keen to start your studies within the next calendar year, you might be eligible to study fee free!

The Queensland government has identified a number of industries with a high demand for trained workers. To help fill these gaps, they will pay the full cost of a number of certificate III qualifications in high-priority study areas under the Certificate 3 Guarantee and User Choice programs. We want school leavers to gain the important skills and training they need before starting their university studies or careers - debt-free. SIT30116 - Certificate III in Tourism.  This qualification provides a pathway to work in many tourism industry sectors and for a diversity of employers including tour operators, inbound tour operators, visitor information centres, attractions, cultural and heritage sites, and any small tourism business. This qualification also allows for multi-skilling and for specialisation in office-based roles involving the planning and coordination of tourism services, or roles in the field where products are delivered.

Possible job titles include:

  • attendant or senior ride operator in an attraction or theme park
  • booking agent
  • cellar door salesperson and guide in a winery
  • customer service agent
  • guide and salesperson in an Indigenous cultural centre
