Are you currently working in the travel and tourism industry and want to progress your career? The Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management can help your career prospects soar!

First you will gain the underpinning skills and knowledge required to sell domestic and international destinations;customer service skills, airline ticketing, selling cruises, booking and processing tour components and preparing itineraries by completing the elective units of the qualification.

After completing the elective travel and tourism focused units, you will gain a broad base of managerial skills required for a supervisor or management position in a travel agency or tourism sales business. These skills sets include managing staff, finances and budgets, quality customer service experiences and monitoring work operations.

Entry requirements

Direct entry, Year 10 or equivalent.  If you're under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.

As the Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management is aimed at individuals already working within the industry, it is a requirement to have access to a travel or tourism workplace in order to complete some of the required assessments of the core units. Students can use their current tourism workplace or alternatively they will be expected to do work experience one day per week for the duration of the course.

Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable Internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

A USB and calculator are required.

Students are also required to wear a TAFE uniform for industry excursions, workshops or networking events.   The uniform comprises of black business pants or skirt, black shoes and a TAFE shirt.  To be able to participate in the volunteer program with the Visitor Information Centre, you will be required to purchase a TTNQ/TAFE branded T-shirt for an additional amount of $44.00.  This fee must be paid upon enrolment into the course.

Timetable

Cairns campus: Delivery is over 5 days per week, over 12 months:
Mon:  * Industry workplace experience; Tues, Wed, Fri 9:00am - 4:00pm and Thurs 11:00am- 4:00pm
*Students already working in the tourism industry are not required to do workplace experience on Mondays.

External delivery is also available to students online!

Placement

Although there is no mandatory work placement, you are required to have access to travel or tourism workplace in order to complete some of the required assessments of the core units.

VET Student Loans

VET Student Loans are an interest-free loan from the Australian Government that help students pay for their education and training.

TAFE Queensland receives the full loan amount for your course directly from the Government, and you repay your loan through the Australian taxation system once your income reaches a certain threshold.

You are eligible for a VET Student Loan if you:

You must demonstrate academic suitability by:

  • providing a copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (year 12 certificate); OR
  • providing evidence of successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English), OR
  • are assessed as a minimum of Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ASCF) in both reading and numeracy

Please note that all students enrolling in an accredited course are required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

VET student loans will not be approved for students who do not meet the eligibility requirements. VET student loans gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front, or you are not eligible for VET Student Loan, you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Note: If you are accessing a VET Student Loan, and there is a difference between the loan cap amount and the total cost of your course (for example your loan cap amount is $10,000 and your course costs $11,000 - there is a $1,000 difference), you are required to pay the difference.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

The Higher Level Skills Subsidy is a one-off subsidy that offsets the cost of an eligible Certificate IV or higher courses.

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • For some courses, you may also be required to hold a certificate 3 in a relevant industry field.

Payment Plan
