Resources required

Please provide your own personal stationery and a USB storage device (memory stick) 2 Mb.

Students are required to have a valid and appropriate email address.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable Internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Uniforms are to be worn at all times during practical services/functions, plus during any/all excursions. This ensures that our students are recognised by Industry as highly employable graduates with impeccable standards of presentation and dress. The uniform requirements are to be provided by students at their own cost and are as follows:

Cairns campus:
1. Long sleeved black business shirt
2. Long black dress pants
3. Black socks
4. Fully enclosed leather dress shoes with non-slip soles

Cannonvale (Whitsundays) campus:
1. Long sleeved charcoal dress shirt with TAFE QLD North student logo embroidered (ordered and purchased at Cannonvale (Whitsundays) Campus Reception)
2. Long apron with pocket (ordered and purchased at Cannonvale (Whitsundays) Campus Reception)
3. Long black dress pants. Black socks

Townsville (Pimlico) campus:

Further information regarding uniform for each campus will be provided at orientation to ensure the uniform meets workplace health and safety requirements and industry standards. These purchases of the above items should only be made after teacher consultation at orientation. 

Timetable

This course is delivered full time over two semesters (12 months)

Cairns Campus:
Semester 1 - attending four days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Monday to Thursday)
Semester 2 - attending four days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Monday to Wednesday) and one shift as vocational placement.

Cannonvale (Whitsundays) campus:
Semester 1 - attending three days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Tuesday to Thursday)
Semester 2 - attending four days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Monday to Thursday)
And for the duration of the program, students will be required to attend a Restaurant Dinner Service, once a month on a Thursday night (4.00pm-10.00pm). As this is a requirement of the program.

Townsville (Pimlico) Campus:
Semester 1 - attending four days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday)
Semester 2 - attending three days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Monday, Tuesday & Thursday)

Placement

All students must complete a minimum of 36 services as part of the course. This may consist of on campus services in our cafes and restaurants and/or in industry as vocational placement.
TAFE Queensland will procure placements on behalf of the students, but it is the student’s responsibility to provide their own transport and accommodation if required.
Vocational placement is industry based shifts and may comprise of evening or weekend shifts.

Important Information

Please note that due to the nature of the hospitality industry, other functions could be conducted on various days, where you will be required to attend.  Also please note that students may be required to attend evening classes for specific electives.

Units

To complete the Diploma of Hospitality Management, students must successfully complete 28 units (13 core units and 15 elective units)

If wishing to complete a Diploma of Hospitality specialising in another industry stream such as; Cookery, Front Office or Housekeeping, credits obtained from completion of Certificate III can be applied.

VET Student Loans

VET Student Loans are an interest-free loan from the Australian Government that help students pay for their education and training.

TAFE Queensland receives the full loan amount for your course directly from the Government, and you repay your loan through the Australian taxation system once your income reaches a certain threshold.

You are eligible for a VET Student Loan if you:

You must demonstrate academic suitability by:

  • providing a copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (year 12 certificate); OR
  • providing evidence of successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English), OR
  • are assessed as a minimum of Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ASCF) in both reading and numeracy

Please note that all students enrolling in an accredited course are required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

VET student loans will not be approved for students who do not meet the eligibility requirements. VET student loans gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front, or you are not eligible for VET Student Loan, you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Note: If you are accessing a VET Student Loan, and there is a difference between the loan cap amount and the total cost of your course (for example your loan cap amount is $10,000 and your course costs $11,000 - there is a $1,000 difference), you are required to pay the difference.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

The Higher Level Skills Subsidy is a one-off subsidy that offsets the cost of an eligible Certificate IV or higher courses.

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • For some courses, you may also be required to hold a certificate 3 in a relevant industry field.

You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability. Outcome

SIT50416 Diploma of Hospitality Management.  When you have finished your course, you will have gained the skills needed to enter the workforce and then to continue a career into a supervisory or management position.
This qualification provides a pathway to work in any sector of the hospitality industry as a departmental or small business manager, or you can choose to move on to further education with a competitive advantage.

University pathways
If you want to go on to further study at university, TAFE Queensland has a pathway option to get you there. In many cases, completing one of our diplomas will give you up to a year credit for related degrees with one of our partner universities. That means cutting down the amount of time you need to complete your degree, or even enrolling straight into the second year of your university course.
