Let TAFE show you how to throw a pot

Ever wanted to know how to ‘throw a pot’ and create your own coffee mug? Interested in making glazes and decorating your pottery to be kiln fired? Then come and explore the world of wheel-thrown pottery with this 10 week introductory course held during the day and take home your own ceramic creations.

You will learn the beginner-level skills and techniques required to make, glaze and fire your very own wheel-thrown pots under close guidance from artist and experienced teacher Jenny Valmadre. Perfect for those starting out or wanting to refresh skills.

This short course is non-accredited therefore is not registered with the National Training Register Course details

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements, this short course is aimed at both beginners and those wanting to refresh and build on their skills.

Resources required

Materials List required for the first class

  • One Bag of throwing clay
    • Keane’s White Raku or Walker’s School blend these are the best clays to learn to throw with, alternative if above is not available: Keane’s 33, PB103 or any stoneware throwing clay
  • P3 mask – student to provide for glazing. (Disposable type is fine)

If possible please bring the following tools

  • Cutting wire (or fishing line or trace with buttons tied on each end)
  • Large car sponge or similar for cleaning wheels and tables
  • Lidded bucket
  • Potters needle (or darning needle in an old wine cork)
  • Towel
  • Small container to hold water on the wheel
  • Notebook and pen

NOTE: Covered shoes must be worn at all times in the studio. We also suggest you wear old clothes and an apron.

Each student must provide a lidded bucket to carry clay slops home and be responsible for recycling their own clay.

This ten week course is delivered face-to-face by experienced artist, potter and teacher, Jenny Valmadre.  Delivery is Tuesdays 9:00am - 12:00pm. L Block.


Please note - This course is offered once a week on a specific day each week. Throughout the year we vary the day that each delivery package may be offered to suit students’ needs and availability. Students are enrolling in a specific day for the duration of the course. Refer to the dates on your Confirmation of Enrolment.
