Learn to perform basic diagnostic procedures, install, test and repair wiring on vehicle lighting systems and electrical security components, install ancillary electrical equipment, and perform minor repairs to electrical circuits, inspect and service batteries, thermal cutting and heating procedures. A sound achievement in Year 10 Maths, and English is desirable. Mature age applicants are welcome.

Resources required

Attire is to be of current industry standard with cotton drill long sleeved shirts and long pants, safety glasses and steel cap boots to be worn during workshop operations.  Students without the appropriate clothing will be refused entry to the workshop.


Mount Isa campus: 14 weeks, consisting of 12 weeks training Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:00am to 4:00pm followed by 2 weeks of full time work experience. Note there will be two, one week breaks during the course. The first break is 25/6/18 to 27/6/18 and the second break is 23/7/18 to 25/7/18.

This course may also be delivered as TAFE at School


It is highly recommended that students undertake work experience while enrolled in this course. Work experience gives employers a chance to see how you perform on the job. It is expected that students will take initiative in finding an employer for work experience. It is recommended that two weeks of work experience are undertaken. 


This successful achievement of this course requires you to complete 16 units; 10 core and 6 elective units.

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses. The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.
