Recognition of Prior Learning

It's time to get your skills recognised!

Did you know that you may be able to gain a formal qualification in your area of expertise with the skills you already have.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment pathway to have your current skills and experience recognised to count towards a formal qualification.

RPL can provide you with a full or part qualification and identify any gap training that is required. You may be able to reduce the time it takes to get your qualification - you may not need to study at all.

Trades funding is available for eligible students. To find out more click here.

Benefits of RPL

  • your skills are formally acknowledged with a nationally recognised qualification
  • you don't have to waste time studying something you can already do
  • you may increase your career opportunities with a formal qualification
  • opportunity for job promotion which may lead to higher income
  • you may be able to fast-track completion of your qualification

There are four easy steps to get your skills recognised!

  1. Provide information about your skills and experience.
  2. Submit your application.
  3. Interview with an Assessor.
  4. RPL Assessment

Map your skills to a qualification

You can now map your existing skills and knowledge using an online self-evaluation tool. This tool will prompt you to select a particular industry area where you can identify one or more qualifications that you may be eligible to RPL.

Please note, you will be directed to the Department of Education and Training website to complete your self-evaluation and will be provided a pdf copy for records.

National recognition

To receive credit for previous study, you will need to be enrolled in the program and provide certified copies of your qualifications, Statement of Attainment or Statement of Results to the Institute. All TAFE Queensland institutes use the same student administration system so you don't need to provide your results if you have studied at another TAFE Queensland Institute.

You cannot receive credit for your whole program of study; at least one competency must be achieved through normal enrolment or RPL.
